Electric Wires and Cables for Automobiles

"Thinner, Lighter, Faster" Wires for Connected Cars

The wires used in wiring harnesses have evolved in response to the need for greater compactness, reduced weight, and high-speed, large-volume communications. We proudly offer an industry-leading lineup of wire products.

High-Voltage Wires

Employed for the high-voltage circuit installed in next-generation vehicles, for example, hybrid vehicle (HEV), plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHV), electric vehicle (EV) and the like.  Employed as the harness component for supplying electricity to various devices such as high-voltage battery, motor, and inverter.

Properties

Copper and aluminum are used for forming the conductor.  The use of aluminum instead of copper has resulted in substantial weight reduction while maintaining high reliability.  The insulator exhibits 2 types of excellent heat resisting property, for example,  resistance against temperatures of 120℃ and 150℃.  It can be used in the high-temperature environment of the vehicle.

Technology

Referring to the crosslinking process (N.B.) applied to the insulator to improve the heat-resistant property of the wire, the heat-resistant wire  that allows crosslinking with steam (developed through the electron beam irradiation crosslinking process, which requires an electron beam irradiation device) was developed and made into a product.
N.B. : Crosslinking among chain macromolecules

Shielded Cables

Employed for control circuits and sensors, which are installed in various types of automobiles such as gasoline-powered vehicle, hybrid vehicle (HEV), plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHV), and electric vehicle (EV). In addition to the function of supplying electricity to the respective circuits, the cable has the shield layer functioning to shield external noise. Noise shielding ensures prevention of circuit malfunction.

Properties

The shield structure has three types including braided structure, horizontal winding structure, and metallic foil tape, which can be selectively used in accordance with the required noise shielding level. Copper is used for forming the braided structure and the horizontal winding structure. Copper and aluminum are used for forming the metallic foil tape. The number of wire cores ranges from 1 to 8.

Technology

For reduction of thickness and weight of the shield cable, the thickness of the insulator of the wire core is reduced. Thinning of the sheath for protecting the shield layer secures thinning and weight reduction of the shield cable while maintaining high reliability.

Aluminum Electric Wires

Aluminum Electric Wires are the wires that replaced conductor materials from copper to aluminum.
These significantly reduce the weight of the wire harness and help improve fuel efficiency.

Properties

We offer a lineup of standard aluminum wires and high-strength aluminum wires as two kinds of automotive aluminum electric wires.
high-strength aluminum wires can be used as signal lines and for engine wiring harnesses. It is possible to use two types of aluminum wires properly according to the purpose of use, location, and required performance.

Technology

SWS is the integrated supplier about aluminium production and has developed the aluminium alloy that is compatible with improved electrical condectivity and tensile strength according to the purpose of use.
