Notice of Reporting Soil Contamination Identified at SWS WAY Center, our Training Institute

Sumitomo Wiring Systems, Ltd. (SWS) reported a case of soil contamination identified at the SWS WAY Center (15-9 Minaminaya-cho, Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture), our training institute, to the Environment Preservation Department, Environment Division, Yokkaichi City on March 25, 2008, based on the regulations in Phrase 1 of Article 72-4 in the Regulations on Preserving Mie Prefecture's Living Environment.

As part of our environment preservation activities, SWS has conducted soil surveys on SWS' s lands in Japan for the past several years. When we surveyed the soil at the SWS WAY Center, lead and selenium exceeding the environmental limit were detected at the five locations surveyed. The highest concentration in the eluted volume exceeded the environmental limits for lead by 160 times and that for selenium by 36 times.

In response to the above results, we also surveyed the underground water, and confirmed that there was no influence on the underground water.

We purchased the land in 1988 and constructed the SWS WAY Center there as welfare facilities for our employees. Currently we use this Center as a training institute. Therefore, we have never used any specified hazardous substances on this site. Although the former owner of the land was leasing the land to another corporation before we purchased it, the business details of that corporation are unknown.

As we have no intention to change the purpose of use or no plan to sell the land, we will take appropriate measures immediately, through administrative guidance, to prevent diffusion of contamination. Specifically, we are going to pave the entire site with asphalt to prevent soil from splashing and rainwater from seeping underground.
