In fiscal 2011, the SWS Group began to commend group companies implementing an exemplary social contribution in meetings where all group companies attend from Japan and overseas. Detailed efforts of awarded companies are also introduced in the meeting to share information on the necessity of social contributions and highlight excellent cases.

SWS established the "Beautify the Asechi River Association" and began purification activities jointly with neighboring communities.
Using effective microorganisms (EM) in these activities has produced good results, such as the
reduction of sludge, elimination of bad odors, and migration of fish.

SWS has commenced to provide education regarding global warming for elementary school students
in the region, in cooperation with Mie Prefecture, Yokkaichi City, and the Board of Education.
This is the first case in the nation where a company is involved from the phase of material preparation,
and is focused on as joint CO2 reduction activities.

The Suzuka Eco Club, an organization within SWS, has been implementing and promoting environmental preservation activities. They began volunteer activities at Ishigaki-ike Park two years ago to provide local residents with a place of relaxation by increasing the amount of flowers and greenery. Since then, they have been arranging flowerbeds and planting seedlings at this time of the year to enhance communication with local residents.

Sumitomo Wiring Systems installed heat-shield glass coating, a technology it is promoting 2009, on the windows of teacher's room at Amana Municipal Elementary School. The installation models energy-saving options for the community; it also helps community members experience the technology and learn how the window coating cuts costs and reduces CO2 emissions.

This is a team consisting of more than 10 voluntary employees of Sumitomo Wiring Systems. At present, there are about 40 teams including approx. 1,000 members in Yokkaichi City where our Head Office is located. They perform Suwa-Daiko drums mainly at the Grand Yokkaichi Festival held in summer. The Sumitomo Wiring Systems Suwa-Daiko drum team joins various internal/external events throughout the year to contribute to developing local traditional performing arts.

To provide support for victims of the huge earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 that occurred of the Indonesian island of Sumatra on September 30, 2009, Sumitomo Wiring Systems donated two million yen to the Japanese Red Cross Society.
We recognize that support for victims of disasters occurring in Japan and overseas is a social responsibility for SWS as a global company, and will continue with such support activities.
The SWS Group has been cooperating with the collection of plastic bottle caps promoted by the Ecocap Movement to fund vaccines for children in developing countries.

The Sumitomo Wiring Systems Suwa-Daiko drum team and players of the Japanese bamboo flute known as "shakuhachi" participated in the event, performing for one hour to enliven the event.

44 employees and their families participated in the volunteer coast cleaning activities organized by the Yokkaichi Sea Turtles Preservation Association, to remove any obstacles such as rubbish and driftwood, so that sea turtles can lay eggs on the coast.

These activities are intended to have children experience "local production for local consumption" by planting and raising vegetables themselves to avoid developing likes and dislikes about food.

We donated two million yen to the Japanese Red Cross Society for damages caused by an earthquake that struck Chinghai in China on April 14, 2010.
As part of the ‘School Class Capabilities Improvement Plan through Collaboration with Companies’ promoted by the Yokkaichi Board of Education, we conduct lectures and practical classes on electricity, safety and manufacturing using wiring harnesses in the science class at junior high schools in Yokkaichi City.

The SWS Suzuka Plant donates the sales of vegetables harvested on the company’s premises and profits raised in in-house bazaars to Prefectural Greenery Promotion Associations. They also plant seedlings provided by Greenery Promotion Associations as part of Greenery Promotion Activities.

We conducted a joint evacuation drill with the local municipality at the SWS Headquarters in Yokkaichi. As our Training Center is designated as an evacuation site in the region, we evacuated to the Center with local people.

Employees in the SWS Group are participating in the volunteer reconstruction assistance activities. They are helping broad support activities related to living in devastated areas, such as reconstruction of devastated sites, adjusting needs of disaster victims at the local volunteer center, sorting of relief supplies, assisting meal supply, etc.
Among support activities that can be implemented without visiting devastated areas, there is an activity to clean photographs salvaged from destroyed houses and return them to the owners, and many employees are participating in this activity.
