Because new chemical substances were added due to the revision of the PRTR (April 2010), the overall handling volume increased by 26.8 tons, compared to the previous year. However, the volume released into the atmosphere decreased by 1.6 tons, and the transfer volume also decreased by 0.4 tons.
The ‘Act on Special Measures for PCB’ went into effect in July 2001. The SWS Group therefore replaced all lighting using a PCB stabilizer. In addition to this, instruments containing PCB, such as high-pressure capacitors, are stored as PCB waste under strict management, and registration of these instruments is being implemented.
We have been arranging a system to dispose of this PCB waste innocuously. In fiscal 2010, we disposed of approximately 4 kL of insulating oil containing low-concentrated PCB used in 10 transformers and 6 capacitors at the Toyo Plant of Ehime Prefecture Waste Treatment Center.
Sumiden Electronics uses many heating instruments. Power consumption therefore accounts for almost 20% of the total consumption in the SWS Group. Previously, the plant temperature was over 40°C in summer due to many heat sources. To improve this, we relocated the furnaces in one location to separate them from others to more efficiently control the plant temperature, implemented measures for heat insulation and coated the plant roof with ceramic to shield solar heat.
These efforts resulted in not only energy saving, but also minimal investment in air-conditioning facilities and reduction of plant temperature by approximately 10°C in summer, producing great effects in health management, such as avoiding heat stroke etc. We will promote energy saving activities so that energy consumption can be adjusted flexibly according to the production volume.
